The 3 session class is a PowerPoint presentation with text slides and many graphics (photos, etc.) slides to illustrate the lecture as we proceed. We focus on stems, roots, and leaves of flowering plants but a good bit of what we cover also applies to conifers. Stems grow longer near the tip and that is the place on the plant where new leaves and axillary buds form; axillary buds are very important in further plant development of side stems of various types including flower development. We consider stem secondary tissue formation in woody plants which involves the development of rings of dividing cells adding additional vascular tissue each year including wood and also formation of bark including the cork of the cork oak. We consider the root system, its growth pattern and function for plants. We consider leaves and their structure which make it possible for leaves to function as the power factory of the plant in carrying out photosynthesis.
We also consider some of the evolutionary modifications of stems, roots and leaves. Some stems act as tendrils to allow plants to climb by clinging to other plants, fences, etc. Some stems and roots have evolved to provide places for starch storage for the plants (think potatoes, taro, yams, turnips, cassava) Some leaves have evolved to attract, capture and decompose insects to provide nutrients for the plant (think pitcher plants, bladderworts, Venus flytraps).

Film description:

Husband and wife Jo Byeong-man and Kang Gye-yeol have managed to preserve their vitality, humor and affection for one another well into their seventh decade of marriage. They reside in a quiet and pastoral region of South Korea and follow many traditional features of Korean culture, from cooking their meals over a simple stone stove to wearing the hanbok robes of past generations.

There is visual poetry in Jin Mo-young’s documentary, My Love, Don’t Cross That River, and unblinking observation as well.

You will probably find yourself bawling your eyes out.

— Michael O'Sullivan, The Washington Post

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing. On November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 p.m. on November 30. Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought fleetingly about writing a novel. There’s also online support and tools available at http://NaNoWriMo.org, such as email pep talks, a huge and supportive online community and blog, and a host of web-based writing tools like word counters.

This planning session for the NaNoWriMo process will be hosted by Local Municipal Liaison Dani Avella, who will give out some general information on NANOWRIMO and the support materials provided online for participants. She will talk about the novel writing process, some of the pitfalls to avoid, and the fact that after 30,000 words your brain can't hold the story in any more. Dani has gone through the NaNoWriMo process and the busy task of editing her own novels.

Learn about the steps in this novel writing process, meet each other and get revved up about the challenge ahead! Please “Come Write In” and join us!

For writers who want to write with other writers, we invite you all to spend some sessions writing together in November. Get some motivation, support, and feedback from other friendly writers. That's how author Sara Gruen got her novel "Water for Elephants" off the ground.

This is the time for people to discuss their aspirations for their own books.

Suncoast Empire: Bertha Honoré Palmer, her Family, and the Rise of Sarasota.

When Mrs. Bertha Potter Palmer of Chicago, wealthy and internationally acclaimed, stepped off the train into the Florida wilderness in 1910, she could not have known that she and her talented family were about to begin a relationship with the Sarasota area that would last seven decades. They would help develop the Sarasota region’s infrastructure, tourist industry, agricultural economy, and international reputation. In return they reaped huge profits. Bertha Palmer died only eight years after first seeing Sarasota, but she was the architect of a family empire embracing 140,000 acres. Her energy and investments transformed a sleepy village into a thriving city and made Sarasota County one of the most important agricultural areas in Florida. Bertha Palmer excelled as a frontier entrepreneur as she had in every other endeavor in her life.
After Bertha Palmer’s death her brother, two sons, and her niece’s husband, a Russian Prince, ably managed the empire she established. They played a big role in helping Sarasota survive the collapse of the Florida land boom in the 1920s and the Great Depression of the 1930s. Indeed the Sarasota County of today would not have been possible without the partnership between the community and the Palmer family.
Frank A. Cassell is Professor Emeritus and President Emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. He earned the B.A. degree at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, and his M.A. and Ph. D. degrees at Northwestern University. He taught and served as an administrator at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Roosevelt University in Chicago before taking the presidency at Pitt-Greensburg.
Cassell has published books and articles on the colonial and early national periods of American history, the Columbian Exposition of 1893, social history in Indiana in the 19th century, and his experiences as a university president.
The University of Pittsburgh Board of Trustees named a new academic building at Pitt-Greensburg in his honor in 2012. He has also won awards for excellence in teaching, outstanding historical research, and community service.
He retired and moved to Sarasota with his spouse, Beth, in 2007 and now serves as a member of the Sarasota County Historical Commission and as chair of the History and Preservation Coalition of Sarasota County.

A burned out lawyer becomes a journalist in a breakaway Protugese backwater and then inherits the leadership of a non-existent terrorist movement. But, what starts out as an amauzing and harmless plot morphs into a deadly serious movement. Shrivers' satire is both lightly humorous and a pierclingly serious look at terrorism.
