Interested in nature and the environment? Come join us for a free screening and discussion of the new POV documentary--The Islands and The Whales--and learn more about how pollution and global warming are affecting coastal communities like ours worldwide.

This documentary has not yet been aired on PBS! Come join us and be some of the first in the country to view this film.

The Islands and the Whales
Filmmaker: Mike Day
Winner, 2016 DOC NYC Grand Jury Prize

Documentary Synopsis:
In their remote home in the North Atlantic the Faroe Islanders have always eaten what nature could provide, proud to put local food on the table. The land yields little, so they have always relied on harvesting their seas. Hunting whales and seabirds kept them alive for generations, and gave them the way of life they love; a life they would pass on to their children. But today they face a grave threat to this tradition. It is not the controversy surrounding whaling that threatens the Faroese way of life; the danger is coming from the whales themselves.

The Faroese are among the first to feel the affects of our ever more polluted oceans. They have discovered that their beloved whales are toxic, contaminated by the outside world. What once secured their survival now endangers their children and the Faroe Islanders must make a choice between health and tradition.

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing. On November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 p.m. on November 30. Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought fleetingly about writing a novel. There’s also online support and tools available at http://NaNoWriMo.org, such as email pep talks, a huge and supportive online community and blog, and a host of web-based writing tools like word counters.

This planning session for the NaNoWriMo process will be hosted by Local Municipal Liaison Dani Avella, who will give out some general information on NANOWRIMO and the support materials provided online for participants. She will talk about the novel writing process, some of the pitfalls to avoid, and the fact that after 30,000 words your brain can't hold the story in any more. Dani has gone through the NaNoWriMo process and the busy task of editing her own novels.

Learn about the steps in this novel writing process, meet each other and get revved up about the challenge ahead! Please “Come Write In” and join us!

For writers who want to write with other writers, we invite you all to spend some sessions writing together in November. Get some motivation, support, and feedback from other friendly writers. That's how author Sara Gruen got her novel "Water for Elephants" off the ground.

This is the time for people to discuss their aspirations for their own books.

A burned out lawyer becomes a journalist in a breakaway Protugese backwater and then inherits the leadership of a non-existent terrorist movement. But, what starts out as an amauzing and harmless plot morphs into a deadly serious movement. Shrivers' satire is both lightly humorous and a pierclingly serious look at terrorism.

I liked this book a lot and will read her other novel, "Learning to Breathe." The story is told in the first person by its main characters.

I felt part of the characters' family in the lowlands of South Carolina. Family issues and mental health always interest me.  Amazon

The following is a quotation from book:
"The idea that some lives matter less is the root of all that is wrong with the world."

Understanding disease is discussed with lots of information, with mention to African diseases. Africa's population is 682 million people, and pharmaceutical companies do not always give away drugs. These developing countries just cannot afford them.  SUNCAT
