Sometimes a little change makes a big difference. If your neighborhood has a small project in mind, consider applying for a neighborhood grant.

This workshop will present an overview of Sarasota County’s Neighborhood Initiative Grant Program (NIGP) process and application. Through the NIGP, neighborhoods may seek up to $10,000 in matching funds from Sarasota County, to apply toward neighborhood improvement projects. Attendance at this workshop satisfies the mandatory workshop requirement for grant applicants. An RSVP for this workshop is required at least 24 hours in advance. RSVP to: Miranda Lansdale, 941-861-5000 or mlansdale@scgov.net.

Henry VIII (r. 1509–47) ruled an island kingdom about the size of Pennsylvania inhabited by fewer than 3 million people nearly 500 years ago, and yet he remains instantly recognizable to this day, his barrel-chested and bejeweled figure immortalized by the brush of Hans Holbein the Younger. Meet England's most famous monarch, who provokes questions such as:
•What is greatness?
•How should we judge character?
•Who or what can be said to "make" or cause history?
A Famous Face ... but Why?
So what accounts for Henry's astonishingly familiar image? Is it because he employed a brilliant portraitist? Or is there more to the story?

Join us for this DVD lecture series on The Age of Henry the VIII lead by Professor, Dale Hoak Ph.D. from The Great Courses. Moderator, Tom Swepston, will show two 30-minute lectures per session with time for discussion at the end. Topics for January 20: Henry VIII - Kingship & Revolution; The Wars of the Roses & Henry VII

Please come to hear author Daniel James Brown at 7 p.m. at the Venice Performing Arts Center. This FREE lecture is in conjunction with the selection of his best-seller The Boys in the Boat for the 2017 “One Book, One Community” program.

The Boys in the Boat details the true story of a group of working-class boys from the University of Washington who ultimately defeated the most talented rowing teams at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The eight-oar crew team shocked the world and inspired a nation by defeating the elite German team rowing for Adolf Hitler.

The Boys in the Boat was a natural choice for 2017’s One Book, considering that Sarasota County will host the 2017 World Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson Park. Brown will talk about how this incredible story came to him, and what surprised him most in his research. His presentation will be followed by Q&A, book signing and sales.

Topics for February 3: King and Cardinal - England Under Wolsey; Magnificence, War & Diplomacy, 1519-1529

Patricia Charpentier - Put Some Meat on Dem Bones. Our genealogical charts and family trees provide us with a wealth of information that tell us where we came from anbd who went before us. Those priceless details form a structure for our history, but how do we put some meat on dem bones? In this lively workshop, we examine many sources of information we can use to fill in the blanks, and give depth and meaning to the facts. Patricia Charpentier is the author of the multi-award winning book, Eating an Elephant: Write Your Life One Bite at a Time. She holds an M.A. in creative writing from the University of Central Florida and a B.A. in journalism from Louisiana State University and has worked as a memoirist, writing coach, editor, writing instructor, journalist and photographer.

Topics for February 17: Anne Boleyn and the King's "Great Matter"; King, Church, and Clergy

Topics for February 24: Church and People - Heresy and Popular Religion; Rex Est Imperator - The Break with Rome

Description

Topics for March 3: Parliament, Law, and the Nation; The Trial and Execution of Thomas More

This story seems to be based on a true story. It is a very interesting story that I enjoyed very much. I do feel sad that is had a happy ending. I don't think the true story did.

A burned out lawyer becomes a journalist in a breakaway Protugese backwater and then inherits the leadership of a non-existent terrorist movement. But, what starts out as an amauzing and harmless plot morphs into a deadly serious movement. Shrivers' satire is both lightly humorous and a pierclingly serious look at terrorism.

I liked this book a lot and will read her other novel, "Learning to Breathe." The story is told in the first person by its main characters.

I felt part of the characters' family in the lowlands of South Carolina. Family issues and mental health always interest me.  Amazon

The following is a quotation from book:
"The idea that some lives matter less is the root of all that is wrong with the world."

Understanding disease is discussed with lots of information, with mention to African diseases. Africa's population is 682 million people, and pharmaceutical companies do not always give away drugs. These developing countries just cannot afford them.  SUNCAT
