The development of tanks in WW I was a response to the stalemate created by trench warfare and the heavy casualties sustained in the first few months of the war. Research and development took place in Great Britain and France, with Germany following later. Duane E. Shaffer discusses the creation of this new weapon and its impact on the battlefield.
